Break out the treats, party people; today is National Dog Day! Whether it’s on your calendar as “International Dog Day” or “Dog Appreciation Day”, National Dog Day is actually a recognized occasion to celebrate the loyalty, love, and just plain awesomeness that is our four-legged friend the dog.
At least around our place, EVERY day is a pretty great day to be a dog. With easy access to good food, clean water, treats (of course!), and a houseful of playmates, what’s not to like about being a dog? Aside from the love and companionship of the family dog, others fight crime, serve in the military, act as the eyes, ears, or nose to their person, or lift the spirits of folks in the hospital. The list goes on and on, and provides plenty of reasons to recognize how important this dog-to-people relationship really is. “I want the world to celebrate dogs for their capacity to love and their ability to impact our lives everyday in the most miraculous ways,” writes National Dog Day founder, author and animal behaviorist Colleen Paige.
If you’re looking for ways to celebrate National Dog Day, get creative. Your dog probably won’t change your status on Yelp, no matter how you choose to spend the time together. If you’re out of ideas, here’s a short list to get the party started:
Go for a walk
Did someone say “dog park”?
Make a donation or volunteer at a shelter or rescue group
Walk or run with your dog on a new route
Go for a ride. Roll down the windows.
If any day merits an extra treat…
Set up a doggie play date
Even your “cat” friends won’t mind a couple of pictures posted with your dog today!
Help a friend or neighbor in need by walking or playing with their dog
Enjoy your dog, enjoy your day!
